Hi Nats,

Thanks for the links.

I have to say that many I hang with in Silicon valley had a dim opinion of RDF as well. Some of their opinions were raised a bit when I allowed them to read some of the threads in the Religion section, but they all complained about the language (As I began to of late - they were the same people who got me to cut back on my cussing).

I would not doubt if this had something to do with the closure of the forums. I am sure that something will arise sooner or later that will give us a more definitive answer.

So far, though, the only good thing I have seen come out of it is that Sam Harris' forums seem to be increasing in activity.

P.S. In case anyone here wonders why I always sign my posts, it's a cognitive tool... So, I don't want to put it into a sig line.

P.P.S. Just meeting someone is not that big a deal. I've met two US Presidents, for instance... It's when they give you their number/card that makes all the difference.
Meeting Tony Grieg was enough to put me off being in awe of any celebs. They fart just like the rest of us. (Oops sorry Matthew). :td:

Apparently so does Larry King, that's why he has a fan under his desk, to blow the smell away from the interviewee.

Does the word "Bullshit" count as cussing?

EDIT:Really though I don't think RDF had more cussing than any other average conversation. Maybe you hang with people who are a bit too fucking sensitive?

Oh, and one of my first thoughts on this was 'did ArseholesInGenesis win?'

Yesterday I was just too shocked to connect the dots of that sad story. After a good night sleep and with the help of some archair psychology, I came up with a story that made sense. Whether it has anything to do with reality, that is of course a completely different question.

- Criticisms like the one you quoted have probably held a lot of weight. As any adolescent knows, the opinion of one's pairs is all that counts, however dumb and ill-informed they may be. So it made perfect sense for Dawkins to ask Josh how he could implement a severe control over his forum's content.

- I am a software developer, and one thing I can tell you is that while we are willing to invest a lot of effort into our own software, tuning or integrating a third-party product is a very frustrating thing to do. So from Josh's point of view, it was the perfect occasion to take the hand on the whole site - although I agree with everybody that it is crappily designed.

- Dawkins probably instructed Josh that he didn't want to lose anything of his gigantic user base in the process. That is pretty clear in that hallucinating part of the message the mods received :
Please do not attempt to inflame the users, start any petitions, or "relocate" groups of users to a separate forum.
But I think RD made a big mistake here. The way to do that is to take extreme care in writing by himself a message that would thank the staff for their terrific job, tell them that they would be a part of the new forum, explain why things were done that way, explain how things would work in the future. Then he would have to answer some of the questions and criticisms in an general way, with an understanding but firm tone. Not an easy task. But he handed that whole task to Josh who did it in the most stupid way possible, and without the legitimacy of being the boss.

- It was very soon clear to Josh that he screwed it. He could have apologized and said "I screwed it". But he chose the less honorable way out, which was an easier thing to do in the short run, but a very dumb thing to do in the long run. Now with the forum being dead, Josh being rightly flamed by everyone, and one month to wait before they put their new thingy in place, they have pretty much lost everything, and we have lost a lot too.

While the overall strategy is understandable, RD and JT have displayed an incredibly low consideration of other people. Now it is a question of which is the bigger between their ethics and their ego. Josh's update from today on RDF doesn't make me optimistic about the winner of that titanic battle.

It's amazing how those bigots make even having some innocent fun into a deadly sin. I bet it's because most of them are either impotent or can't get any and the bouncy girl was just the last thing for them so they whined.

The Politics forum, while unruly, was chocked full of interesting debate and discussion on a variety of subjects. Why should RD fans limit themselves to only scientific debate? Surely the subject of "reason" should touch upon Politics as well, yes?
Exactly. If they didn't want political discussion then why did they have the Politics forum at all? There were forums dedicated to evolutionary theory, RD's writings, general science, etc. the postings in there were generally on topic and if it veered off it was usually brought back into line by the mods. Then there were the more social forums like Off-Topic and General. What did they expect people to post in those, anyway?
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
